The course will provide them with the basic skills they need to fulfil their duties as part of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations (NI) 1982.
By the end of the course, delegates will have an understanding of how to treat individual injured people in the workplace.
The course covers such topics as how to assess an incident, the defined roles and responsibilities of an Emergency First Aider, the signs and symptoms of injury and illness and how to assist an individual suffering after an accident or illness in the workplace.
More specifically, the course is broken down into the following sections:
Initial Care
In this section delegates will be taught a basic understanding of up-to-date regulations and standards that they will have to adhere to. Potential barriers to treating individuals will also be discussed as well as how to assess an injury in the first instance and what to do when treating a patient who is unconscious as a result of their accident or illness.
Cardiac Care
This section of the course provides an outline of heart attacks and cardiac arrest and what to look out for in a person who may be suffering cardiac arrest. Delegates will also have explanation and demonstrations for single-rescuer CPR, chest compressions and Two-rescuer CPR and CPR handovers.
General First Aid
The final section of the course covers some other first aid issues that may arise in the workplace. Individuals will be taught how best to deal with choking, seizures and epilepsy, how to act fast when a person suffers burns in an accident, how to cope with spinal injuries and also how to tend to bleeding, wounds and help a person in shock.
The course is taught in a single day through classroom instruction and the participants will be assessed with a series of written and spoken questions, alongside practical demonstrations.
All successful participants will be awarded with the HABC Level 2 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (QCF) and a wallet-sized plastic card detailing this qualification. The course validates successful pupils as emergency first aiders for three years.
Once the HABC Level 2 Emergency First Aid course has been completed, the next steps are varied. There is the option to move up to Level 3 of the same award. Alternatively the next step is on to the Level 2 Award in Risk Assessment or the Level 2 Award in Health and Safety.
Entrants to the course must be a minimum of 16 years of age and be fluent in both spoken and written English. Basic numeracy skills are also required.
