How is the course taught and assessed?

The course is classroom based, with a combination of both tutorials and practical exercises. Assessments are conducted via tests in both practical and theory elements.

Who should take this course?

This CPCS A17 Telescopic Handler course is suitable for both potential students who have had no previous training or for existing operatives that require a refresher course in addition to their training qualification.

The 5 definitive subtypes available to course candidates:

  • A17A: Industrial Telescopic
  • A17B: Up to 9 metres
  • A17C: All sizes excluding 360-degree slew
  • A17D: All sizes including 360-degree slew
  • A17E: Suspended load (non-rough terrain)

This course length differs, dependent on the previous experience of each operative. For those experienced candidates, the course length is 3 days, 4 day course for a novice, and 5 days for any inexperienced operatives.

What qualification will I receive?

Upon successful completion of this CPCS A17 course, operatives will be certified to CPCS Red Trained Operator Card (with completion of the CPCS Technical tests) and the CITB National College Certificate.

Entry requirements

In addition to a good understanding of both spoken and written English, students are required to have successfully completed a CITB Health, Safety and the Environment Test (HS&E) within the previous 2 years.

  • Evaluation of the load safety applicable to lifting procedures
  • Routine maintenance and service procedures relative to specific manufacturer detail
  • Knowledge of site conditions, gradients, weight, size and load with their influences on stability of machinery
  • Awareness of how to fully operate the machinery, and the maintenance requirements
  • The ability to load, transport and store varying types of materials
  • Knowledge of basic pallet construction
