Changes to the CITB HS&E Test in 2018
In 2017, it was announced that there were going to be several changes to the CSCS test and that they would be implemented in phases, starting in January 2018. However, it is important to know what these changes are, which ones are already live, and which are yet to come – all of which, and more, can be answered on this page.
Why is the Test Being Changed?
Many people wonder why the test is being changed, and why it cannot just be left the way it is. The reason for this is that the CITB need to take the time to revise the test to ensure that the questions and content are relevant, but also that the test is accessible to ensure that people are able to make it within the time limit. As it is so important to prevent workplace accidents from occurring, every precaution must be taken to make sure that the test is passed fairly. By being informed of the updates, you can make sure to be fully prepared if you need to retake the CSCS test in order to renew your card.
What Changes Have Been Made?
There are three phases of redevelopment for the HSE test, some of which have already been implemented. In brief, the changes are as follows:
Changes made on January 8, 2018
There are two new styles of questions introduced in this update, the first of which was drag and drop text.
The second form of question was multiple choice with images, which have been applied to 57 newly revised questions.
There is also a new platform that allows for the sampling of questions from this phase before the test is taken, allowing the candidate to get a good feel for the content.
Changes made on June 1, 2018
There are new question styles to make the test content more diverse. This includes the implementation of drag and drop images, which works nicely alongside the drag and drop text updates.
There are also hot spot questions, and these work where select your answer by selecting a specific section of an image in accordance with the question, revealing a correct answer. The hot area questions work in much the same way, but with a slightly larger area that can be clicked to reveal the right answer.
Updated revision material was released two months before these changes were implemented.
What Changes are Yet to Come and When?
The only changes that are left to be implemented are set to be released on June 3rd, 2019. Currently, these changes are under review and being tested on a number of candidates (similar to the process used in earlier updates). It is in the Blueprint stage at this time, but set to go into full testing within the year.
The review is in place to ensure that the test questions still align with the current standards and activities within the industry, so everything is up to date and contains relevant and potentially lifesaving information. It will also include a full review of all of the materials used for revision to make sure that everything is accurate and clear. No further details of these updates have been revealed at this time.
How Will You Know How to Answer the New Question Styles?
There is no need to worry about not knowing how the new questions need to be answered. CITB have ensured that the newly updated HSE test will have a tutorial at the start so that you can get used to how it works to ensure that you make it within the time limit.
Will the Changes Affect Test Booking?
The simple answer to this is, no. The booking process will remain exactly the same, and you can find more information on the process and how to get your CSCS test booked on our website.
What is the HSE Test and Why is it Important?
The HSE test is essential because you cannot obtain a CSCS card without passing the test. It is taken using a touchscreen computer, and consists of 50 questions that you will answer in less than an hour – so you have to answer them quickly. However, with the right practice and revision, it shouldn’t be too tricky to pass the test on your first try.
The reason you need a CSCS card is because the vast majority of reputable building sites will require you to have one. This is so that they know you have the right skills and training, but also understand the risks and how to behave correctly when on the site. Passing your CSCS test is incredibly important, and this is why you need to know about the changes being made by CITB.
